THANKS **************************************************************************** Second Announcement and call for extended abstracts INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE on Electromagnetic and Light Scattering by Non-spherical Particles: Theory, Measurements, and Applications 5-9 June 2006, St. Petersburg University, St. Petersburg, Russia **************************************************************************** Dear Colleague, You are cordially invited to attend the 9th International Conference on Electromagnetic and Light Scattering by Non-Spherical Particles at the St. Petersburg University, St. Petersburg, Russia, on June 5-9, 2006. The conference is part of two series of conferences started in 1995 (Amsterdam) and 1996 (Bremen). This is internationally recognized conference that covers all aspects of single and multiple light scattering with special emphasis on scattering by non-spherical and heterogeneous particles. The aim of the series of conferences is to bring together experts in theory, computations, experiments and those working on specific applications (astronomical, geophysical, environmental, material science), to foster collaborations. The conference will cover: - new theoretical developments and numerical experiments in light scattering by non-spherical particles and particles with complex internal structure, - laboratory experiments in light scattering by natural and artificial particles, - single and multiple light scattering by dust grains and aerosols in terrestrial and planetary atmospheres (including exoplanets) and various cosmic objects, - application of light scattering methods in biology and biomedicine, - light scattering methods to control material properties in chemical and material science experiments and in technological processes. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The host of the Conference is the Sobolev Astronomical Institute of St. Petersburg University. Znamenka is located at about 27 km from St. Petersburg city on the road to its famous suburb Peterhof (just one stop before it). One can reach Znamenka by the buses 300, 404, 424, 424a from the metro station "Avtovo" or by the buses 103, 420 from the metro station "Leninskii prospect" (the bus trip should take about 25 min.). The hotel is situated in the park zone at the gulf coast within a 5 minute walk from the road (to the right/north). On the days of arrival and departure a special bus/car connection between the Pulkovo airport and the hotel will be organized. The meeting will include morning and afternoon sessions consisting of invited lectures, oral talks and long poster sessions during coffee-breaks. Coffee, tea, juice, mineral water will be served during the breaks. The participants will have permanent access to fax, computers, copy machines, etc. Access to the internet may be restricted. Extended Abstracts ------------------ Abstracts of all contributions (invited reviews, contributed talks, posters) will be published by the St. Petersburg University as a booklet that will be made available to participants at the conference begin (and electronically through our Web site about one month in advance). A copy of the conference abstracts will be provided to the Astrophysics Data System (ADS). For this booklet, each author MUST prepare his/her abstract in LaTeX, using the TEMPLATE that will be made available on our Web site: http://www.astro.spbu.ru/ELS9/abstr.html The abstract may not exceed four pages. Contributors should strictly stick to the guidelines given within the template; else problems could arise when their abstracts are processed. The abstract LaTeX file together with figures in postscript format must be sent back to els9@astro.spbu.ru. Documents prepared in Word will be considered in exceptional cases. The deadline for RECEIPT of the abstracts is February 15, 2006. Notification of acceptance of the abstracts is: April 15, 2006. Conference Program ------------------ The detailed program will be announced through the final announcement to be lunched on May 1, 2006 after the approval of extended abstracts. Conference Proceedings ---------------------- A special issue of the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer (JQSRT) will be published after the conference. The deadline for submissions of papers will be October 1, 2006. Hotel Reservation ----------------- Hotel reservations can be made through the LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE, using the accompanying Accommodation Form. All 85 (mainly double) rooms of the hotel "Znamenka" are available for our booking until February 15, 2006. At present about 70 persons have pre-registered, so we do not anticipate problems with accommodating everyone. The rooms can be placed in 5 categories (see the table).
The hotel is a palace (a summer residence of the Russian royal family) built in the 1720s. In the last years, 2/3 of the hotel rooms were repaired. Less comfortable rooms have a slightly reduced price (not shown in the table). We plan to book a block of 16 Single and 27 Double rooms for 70 pre-registered persons for 5 nights (June 4-9). The personal distribution of the rooms will be made after receiving your Accommodation Form. If you like a room in ANOTHER CATEGORY or for a LONGER TIME, let the LOC know as soon as possible! The hotel "Znamenka" is actually a pension. It provides different categories of meal. For the conference we selected the most expensive but flexible "Swedish table" one that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner with a rich choice and costs 750 Rbl per person per day. The price of the meals is not included in the room prices. If any questions about this arise, please contact the LOC. Please, keep in mind that June is a peak of the tourist season in St. Petersburg and the hotel "Znamenka" having a locally very high ratio of quality to price is nearly fully booked already in March. The hotel agrees to wait for our booking until February 15, but requires 50% of the funds at this time to insure availability. Therefore, WE ASK YOU, IF POSSIBLE, TO REGISTER EARLY. THOSE WHO HAVE NOT PRE-REGISTERED MUST REGISTER and transfer the conference fee BEFORE February 15 as after that time we cannot guarantee any (at least comfortable) room at this hotel. We can advise you where to arrange more reasonable or more expensive hotel rooms (see, e.g., http://www.rus-hotels.com for more information). For example, a very comfortable hotel "Baltic Star" http://www.balticstar-hotel.ru with rooms for Euro 200 per day in this season is located on the road between the city and Peterhof, 12 km from Znamenka and 15 km from the city. Note that if you stay at other hotels, daily transportations to/from the conference place will be your responsibility. Registration fee ----------------
The registration fee includes: the conference fee (Euro 350-420) and two-day accommodation in the hotel (Euro 100). The conference fee includes: participation in all sessions, booklet of abstracts, coffee breaks, a volume of the proceedings, conference dinner, excursion, special bus transportation to the hotel on arrival/departure. Children are free of all fees. Method of payment ----------------- One can pay the registration fee in Euros or US dollars. Please use international money transfer in Euros to: (the purpose of transfer should be "compensation" for us to avoid problems with taxes) Legal name: Il'in Vladimir Borisovich Account No.: 42301978915000000051 Bank: Industry & Construction Bank PLC. 38 Nevsky Ave. 191011 St. Petersburg Russia Branch: filial "Kirovskii ob'edinennyi" SWIFT code: ICSPRU2P Please use international money transfer in US dollar to: (the purpose of transfer should be "compensation" for us to avoid problems with taxes) Legal name: Il'in Vladimir Borisovich Account No.: 42301840715000000127 Bank: Industry & Construction Bank PLC. 38 Nevsky Ave. 191011 St. Petersburg Russia Branch: filial "Kirovskii ob'edinennyi" SWIFT code: ICSPRU2P PLEASE, supply your transfer with sending an e-mail to the LOC (ELS9@astro.spbu.ru). Arrival and departure --------------------- The participants are expected to arrive at St. Petersburg on Sunday, June 4. At the airport (railway station, etc.) there will be representatives of the Local Organizing Committee who will help you to reach the hotel. It is expected that you e-mail the details of your travel in advance to the LOC in advance. The transportation of participants to the airport and railway station also will be organized at the end of the conference. Social events ------------- Saint-Petersburg was established by Peter the Great in 1703 and for over 200 years the city was the capitol of the Russian Empire. St. Petersburg with 5 million citizens still remains a cultural center of Russia. It is famous due to its world-reknown museums (Hermitage, Russian paintings museum) and theatres (Kirov Ballet/Mariinski Opera), numerous palaces, cathedrals and churches, monuments and memorials. The unique beauty of St. Petersburg is created by numerous bridges over many rivers and channels crossing the city and magnificent classic architectural ensembles. One can easily reach marvelous Russian tsar residences with palaces and parks in the vicinity of the city - in Peterhof, Pushkin, Pavlovsk, Oranienbaum, Gatchina and other suburbs. A half of one day will include an excursion to St. Petersburg (a bus tour over the historical center and a visit to the Hermitage). Because of the comfortable location of Znamenka close to Peterhof, excursions to its parks and palaces can be organized during longer lunch breaks. Additional excursions (in particular for accompanying persons) can be organized by the LOC, BUT it should be settled in advance. So, please indicate in the Accommodation form any additional excursions you would like to have. Possible local and regional tours: - Tour to Pushkin (Tsarskoe selo) visit of the palace of Ekaterine the Great; - Boat voyage along the St. Petersburg rivers and channels; - Excursion to the Russian paintings museum; - Day-long tour to the Great Novgorod, visiting the Sofiysky cathedral (XI century), the Kremlin, the Granovity palace (Hall of Facets), the Yur'ev cloister; - Visits to St. Petersburg State University, Main Astronomical (Pulkovo) Observatory, Main Geophysical Observatory, etc. Climate ------- St. Petersburg's location on the bank of a gulf shapes the climate of the city - summers are moderately warm and humid. In the beginning of June the average monthly temperature is about +20C. Visas ----- Citizens of most countries (probably excluding only a few countries of the former Soviet Union) need an entry visa. For current information, please contact your nearest Russian Embassy or Consulate. To avoid problems, please apply for visa not later than 2 MONTHS PRIOR to the start of your visit. To facilitate your getting the visa, we will send you a letter of support (official invitation) after receiving your required data from you (see the Visa Support Form). If you need such letter, please also FAX to +7 (812) 428 7129 (for Vladimir Il'in) a copy of two adjacent pages of your passport which contain your photo, passport number and date of expiry. Do likewise with the passports of all accompanying persons. Note that the preparation of such a letter by the Russian bureaucracy may take up to 6 weeks. Grants ------ Organizers will provide grants for supporting participants from countries with special hardships. However, the total amount of funding will be very limited. After reviewing all the applications, the LOC will inform each applicant of the result. We strongly encourage participants to pursue other means of support, e.g., Americans through NSF, citizens from former Soviet Union through INTAS (www.intas.be) and other foundations, etc. Dates and Deadlines ------------------- July 18, 2005 First Announcement November 24, 2005 Second Announcement and call for extended abstracts February 15, 2006 Early registration February 15, 2006 Grant application February 15, 2006 Deadline for submission of abstracts April 15, 2006 Notification of acceptance of the abstracts May 1, 2006 Final Announcement and preliminary program May 1, 2006 Deadline for registration October 1, 2006 Deadline for submission of papers to JQSRT special issue Exchange rate ------------- The currency used in Russia is the Ruble (Rbl).
