Sport-express was founded in Moscow in August 1991. At that time soccer was not popular in Russia since living standart was extremely low and people were not much interested in sports. The attendance of sport events was very little.

But Sport-express correspondents decided to popularize Russian soccer. Most articles of the daily has been dedicated to the materials relating to this game. Due to the work of Sport-express correspondents and that of other editions together with TV attendance of soccer matches has been slowly rising and soccer itself has become more popular.

By 2005 the circulation of Sport-express was 680,000 - probably, the biggest in Europe among similar newspapers.

Sport-express was the first in Russia to award soccer players by marks. After each game the daily's experts estimate the performance of each player on 10-point system. The system of the daily marks is as follows:
