Solikamsk
flourished in the 17th century. The getting of salt gave a huge income to the city. There was also a busy trade in
Solikamsk because goods were transported to Siberia and from there through the city. Crafts
developed, especially stone architecture. The wood Solikamsk was gradually substituted for
the stone one.
The central architectural ensemble of Solikamsk includes some buildings. The main one is
St. Trinity Cathedral, which was being erected from 1685 to 1697. The money were appropriated
by Solikamsk ordinary people and the Tsar. It was the first stone church in the city and the evidence
of the city's social and economic flourishing. The Cathedral has five domes, two side-chapels, a gallery, and two porches. Due
to special architectural features it seems very light and directed upwards. The main idea of the building is the idea of motion.
It adds a special solemnity to the Cathedral. Since Solikamsk wood architecture had great
traditions before, it left its mark on the temple. For example, the stone columns of the west porch seem to be carved in wood,
not in stone. The rich ornamental design, unusual patterns, picturesque jambs of the windows, beautiful porches are evidence of
outstanding imagination of the architect. Unfortunately, his or her name is still unknown.
