The Bell Tower of St. Trinity Cathedral and the
Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross was erected in 1713. The
Bell Tower consists of two main parts: a huge massive cube and a tower with eight sides over
the cube. This combination has no direct analogues in the Russian architecture. Merchants' goods were kept in the basement
of the Tower. The town council, gorodskyaya duma (municipal council), and court worked on the first
and second floors. Thus, it was an administrative building. The silhouette of the Tower has become the symbol of the city of
Solikamsk.
The total height of the Tower is 60 meters. The original dome has not been preserved. The metal steeple
and another dome were installed by restorers in the 1950s. According to the list of 1875, the Bell Tower
had 12 bells. One of them, weighing 165 poods (about 6,000 pounds), has been preserved. That bell
was cast by Solikamsk town master Vasily Petelin in 1811. The biggest
bell weighed 355 poods (about 13,000 pounds). Solikamsk
Bell Tower is slightly inclined. Probably, it bent down during the constructing due to the
uneven subsidence of soil.
