The male Ascension Monastery was founded as long ago as at the end of the
16th century. The money were appropriated by Solikamsk citizens
Vassily Onufriev and Prokopii Moiseev. The Monastery had many
temples, but only two of them have been preserved to our time. The first one is the
Church of Michael Malein, located over then Holy Gates (on the right in the photo). It was built in
1731-1734. The peculiarity of the Church is that its bell tower is over the main volume of the Church. Because of fires it was
rebuilt a lot of times. The original dome of the bell tower has been lost. Another temple is
Ascension Church, built in 1698-1704. Its building suffered changes many times. Its original
dome has been lost as well.
In the 18th century the Monastery was quite big. According to the list of 1724 it numbered 443 males. In 1730 a building of
hospital and a fence were erected. However, the Monastery often suffered from fires and needed reconstructing. The Monastery
was finally finished off by Communists. During the Soviet times it almost collapsed. However, nowadays the
Ascension Monastery is opened again and being gradually restoring.
